Disney’s Cruella Set Recreation

Disney’s Cruella took the classic story of the 101 Dalmatians villain and turned it on its head. Throwing the story into central London in the 70’s, the home of mod fashion, gave the characters a new look and surrounding. Inspired by the trailer before the movie was released, I took it upon myself to create a small set that could have been pulled right from the screen.

The abandoned London loft, home to Jasper, Horace and Cruella, served as the striking backdrop for the story, with exposed brick and left over architectural features, adorned with a groovy mishmash of furnishings and decor. This style also offered the perfect backdrop to showcase Cruella’s unique fashion sketches and garments in their own light.

Taking it a step further, I wanted to create distinct visuals that played off the campiness of the existing visuals and original cartoon elements, such as the broken, corduroy panelled wall and hastily spray painted Dalmatian spots. Down to custom fake brick work, story based set dressing and an easter egg to the original film - a fake brass statue of the original animated Cruella, I was very happy to create an homage to the new movie, celebrating and playing with its distinct visual style.
